12th July - Boxted Vs Purleigh
Firstly; thanks goes to Purleigh who didn’t fancy filling in our score book!?
On the back of a good win last weekend (Based on Bello) Boxted went out hoping to continue their winning streak at home to Purleigh. At a crucial stage of the season wins to remain in the division is key and full commitment was needed by all players.
On losing the toss and being elected to bat first both Clive and Philler’s went about scoring more heavily than usual over the first 12 over’s, gaining 36. Unfortunately in the 13th over Clive was given out LBW for a score of 12. An injured Booker then strolled to the crease managing 3 before getting out in the 17th over; 1 over after Philler’s was slip caught for a score of 18. At this stage Boxted were 52 from 17 for 3. Bello and Macca then put on an impressive 30 from the subsequent 4 over’s although Bello’s shot which saw him out for 25 is best forgotten! Dowde then played a few expected and extravagant shots falling from a boundary catch for a score of 4. Hambo (10) and Macca then continued the run chase for a defendable score managing to retain their wicket until the fall of Macca in the 35th over. Delly and Nutter added a further 15 while Graham managed a surprising 16; a possibly highest score?? Final; Boxted all out 168 in the 44th over.
With a very much defendable score, opening bowlers Booker and Delly did a superb job ensuring Boxted kept Purleigh away from their required run rate. With no facts or figures (cheers again Purleigh!) all that needs to be said was what a fantastic bowling showcase against the division leaders; Booker (0 wickets -10 over’s -30 runs), Macca (2-10-39), Nutter (2-8-36) and Dowde (1-7-36). However recognition for Delly’s performance must be made managing a fantastic 5 wickets for 20 runs off 10 over’s. The opening bowlers set a perfect foundation; backed up by the following attack; for a very close and well deserved victory only secured in the 45th over! Good commitment and enthusiasm in the field added to the efforts seen within the team.
Final result Boxted win by 5 runs! As I’m sure everyone will agree, a somewhat exciting however nerve racking game; one very much glad to have won and been apart of!
Boxted IIs vs. Braintree College - 19th July 2009 - Braintree College won by 216 runs
After a couple of wins against top 3 sides, the second team (finally) arrived in Braintree full of hope and expectation, that wasn’t to last long. Stand-in skipper Bello opted to field with 10 players, a decision he was to live to regret. Neil Hornsby and Macca shared the new ball, baffling the Braintree openers with pace from one end and precision from the other (sorry Macca for giving you the slope). Macca managed to induce a false shot from the Braintree opener that was snaffled eventually by Mark behind the stumps after a tumble for the cameras. That was the high point of the day, as carnage enthused. Bello tried 8 bowlers in order to try and slow the run rate. A special mention to Clive (9-0-42-1) and Craig (7-0-48-2) who both bowled well and economically. Craig getting rid of the opener for 60, via a brilliant caught and bowled.
Some of the fielding left a lot to be desired by the 2nds with dropped catches (Macca going through the pain barrier to drop one off Bello’s bowling) and sloppy outfielding that must have given the opposition in excess of 50 runs. This alongside brilliant batting from Braintree (Archer getting 125) resulted in a massive total of 301-4 off 40 overs for Boxted to chase.
After a tea where most players seemed more interested in the trials and tribulations of England trying to bowl out the Australians, Boxted set about trying to achieve their target of 7.5 runs per over. Clive and Steve Philpott set about laying the foundation with a partnership of 46 off 12 overs. Following Clive’s dismissal in strode a confident Chris (3) only to be given a harsh LBW decision. Philpott and Bello tried to steady the ship but were out in quick succession. Thankfully Boxted were quickly put out of their misery by Braintree taking 3 wickets in 4 balls and Andy deciding that his sleep was more intriguing than facing their bowlers.
Roll on next week as we surely can’t get any worse.
Little Clacton Vs Boxted - 26th July - Boxted won by 5 wickets
After an overwhelming defeat the previous weekend and under the supervision of the Vice Captain; Graham; Boxted were away to Little Clacton. After winning the toss and electing to field first, we went out with enthusiasm and encouragement for the up and coming game.
Opening pair Matt Wilson (6 over’s – 26 runs – 0 wicket – 0 maidens) and debuting Steve Nolan (10-59-1-0) commenced the attacked and were unable to gain a wicket during the first 12 over’s. At the first change Jon (7-19-3-1) and Michael (9-47-1-0) continued the attack again unable to secure the illusive 1st wicket. All 4 bowlers bowled extremely well and managed to keep little Clacton to a score of only 99 from 23 over’s without loss. At this stage a bowling change was needed and Rob and Justin were brought on. Things were running well for Boxted albeit without any wickets being taken. Rob (4-28-1-0) ) bowled extremely well with Justin (5-39-0-0) providing good support from the other end. Over after over was bowled with no wicket until the return of Jon managing to take the first wicket in the 37th over. From here the opening bowlers commenced a severe attack on Little Clacton managing 5 wickets in the remaining 8 over’s. Praise goes to Saumil, another debuting player who bowled very well managing 4 over’s for 20 runs; a superb effort providing good pressure when it was needed. Final Score – Little Clacton 245 for 6
On Boxted’s effort to secure a win opening pair Pat (89) and Clive (35) put on a fantastic partnership, putting sound foundations on which to build. On the loss of both batters during the 20th and 21st over’s, Justin and Tim came to the crease. Justin unfortunately caught and bowled in the 22nd over hinted at another Boxted batting collapse, however good judgment or blind luck by Tim saw him move to 30 until his luck run out, caught from a custom Tim shot. Meanwhile at the other end Steve (54) was playing with perfect timing and skill scoring readily and at ease. Managing his 50 and with Matt (21) at the other end took Boxted to victory. Final score Boxted win by 5 wickets
Boxted Vs West Mersea - 9th August - West Mersea won by 110 runs
On the weekend of the 9th August, Boxted were home to West Mersea. With a starting team of only 7, we were hoping to win the toss and bat; unfortunately this didn’t happen; we lost and subsequently were erected to field.
From the initial over things started well in firstly securing a wicket on the second ball and then limiting the visitors run rate through opening bowlers Pat (10 overs -1 maiden -46 runs – 1 wicket) and Macca (10-1-58-2). They supported each other well which resulted in a superb score of only 40 from the first 10 overs. At the first change Matt (10-0-39-0) and Clive (9-0-75-0) were brought on to continue the good work albeit Goodrich and Fuller had settled nicely into their rhythm; both of whom started scoring more freely. The following 10 overs resulted in a further 66 runs being added to the score. A fantastic effort by Matt bowling right through and good support by Clive meant Boxted were still looking at a score very much achievable. A breakthrough came in the 24th over with a further 2 wickets falling in the 32nd and 37th overs. A good all round bowling attack including a good spell by Bello (4-0-37-1) and fielding effort managed to limit the visitors to 276.
In only having 8 wickets in hand Boxted were looking for a sound foundation onto which they could build from. Pat (23) and Clive (13) started however losing their wickets in quick succession meant it was down to Bello (39) and Matt (39). Prior to the point of losing this pair again in quick succession, Boxted glimpsed at a possible win. Unfortunately losing the remaining batters Macca (9), Hambo (2), Mark NO (6) and Graham (2) in a typical collapse meant this glimpse was short lived.
Result West Mersea win by some 110 runs. Though on paper a sever loss, a good all round effort was seen with the securing of some seriously vital points at the stage of the season and division survival at stake.
Gt Horkesley Vs Boxted - 16th August - Boxted won by 7 wickets
With the team being lead for the 6th time by Graham, we were hoping to continue his winning fortune against Great Horskley. Things started well with some superb weather which then continued in winning the toss and electing to field first.
Opening bowlers Steve N and Pat commenced the attack on a less than fantastic wicket; however both made good use of the unpredictable bounce and movement. The first wicket fell in the 7th over bowled Steve with the following ball gaining us the 2nd wicket of the day. Unfortunately this didn’t lead to a hat trick however at this stage Boxted was going well, restraining Great Horskley to 28 runs from 10 overs. Things then went slightly down hill with batters Thotapalli and Thomas managing to put on a good partnership of 41. By the fall of 20 overs Great Horskley managed to score 69. From here Boxted lifted there game hugely managing to take 1 wicket in each of the 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th overs finishing Great Horskley’s innings for 97 runs off 26.5 balls. Some suburb balling my Pat (21 runs, 10 overs, 4 maidens, 1 wicket) Steve N (21, 6, 0, 2), Macca (14, 3, 0, 3) and Sunny on a very unpredictable pitch put Boxted in a good position; albeit the runs wouldn’t come easy. A special thanks does go to Sunny who bowled fantastically managing to secure figures of 39 runs off 7.5 overs taking crucial 4 wickets.
In Boxted’s attempt to achieve the run rate, Clive and Steve P started the innings. Both batters were going well up to over 4 by where Steve P was unfortunately bowled for a score of 11. Clive and Pat then continued the run rate attack securing 30 runs from the first 8 overs; considering Boxted had around 60 overs to play with, this was more than ample. However, unexpectedly Clive played onto his stumps after hitting his foot out for a well deserved 7. Steve N then walked to the crease which resulted in an unlucky duck and so came Macca (NO 9). At this stage Boxted’s thoughts turned to a possible defeat considering the pitch and the pitch conditions; however over 18 changed this when Pat (NO 63) managed a sublime 22 from one over comprising of 5 fours, 1 wide and 1 run. With some good batting at the other end by Macca, both batters saw Boxted home to a well deserved win.
Final score Boxted win by 7 wickets. Wohoo! 6 out of 6!!
23rd August Boxted Vs High Easter - High Easter won by 65 runs
This weekend’s home game against High Easter saw the Captain back in action. Things started with Boxted commencing the bowling attack and High Easter the batting.
The opening pair Steve (10 overs – 54 runs – 1 wicket – 0 maidens) and Saumil (10 – 49 – 2 – 0) bowled well albeit a few extras were seen. However the good pressure resulted in 2 wickets falling in quick succession in the 6th and 7th over. Things continued well with the 4th wicket falling in the 10th over for a score of 48 and the introduction of Sunny (10 – 35 – 1 – 0) and Macca (10 – 35 – 2 – 1). As they both bowled pressure was building and as a result 2 wickets were lost by the 20th over. Things were going well and by the 23rd over High Easter had scored 96 for the loss of 6 wickets. As Richard (2 – 12 – 0 - 0, Clive (3 - 26 – 0 – 0) and the return of the opening pair continued the attack High Easter managed to step it up a gear and batted extremely well ensuring all overs were used and a score was present on the board worthy of a defence. A special note goes to Richard who managed a suburb run-out hitting the stumps directly from a boundary throw in.
On Boxted’s attempt to hunt down High Easters score the batting was average with a few players including Clive, Steve, John and Graham all managed good starts scoring in the 20’s however were unable to make these into winning totals. Unfortunately with a total of 206 to achieve, only managing 149 was a disappointment especially as it seemed in our grasp.
Disappointing result however promising batting, bowling and fielding efforts will ensure enthusiasm will continue through the remaining games of the season. Roll on next weekend!
30th August - Abberton Vs Boxted - Abberton won by 46 runs
Hambo won the toss and elected to put the opposition in on a green tinged, unknown how it would play track at Eight Ash Green's neutral ground.Steve Nolan and Rob Nutter opened the bowling with reasonable spells going for 3 an over.In the 6th over we gained our 1st. wicket with a brilliant run out by Steve Nolan who reacted brilliantly at short fine leg collecting the ball and throwing down the wicket in 1 swift movement to account for opener Cowland 18-1. This brought together the 2 x Browns who added 122 partnership in 20 overs before Steve Nolan reverting to his spin bowling option had K Brown caught at mid wicket by Hambo 136-2. A couple of overs later Steve Nolan bowled young opener Brown for a fluent 66 - 147-3 off28overs.
The experienced Lingard & Fosker then put on 51 in 7 overs before Fosker was bowled by Rob Nutter in his 2nd spell 10-0-53-1. Rob was unlucky not to claim more wickets due to some dropped catches. Steve Nolan ended his spell 10-1-55-2 and was a handful for the opposition what ever variation of bowling he delivered.Clive 10-0-51-1 claimeed the 5th wicket having Lingard caughht by Stve Philpott on mid wicket boundary.Maca bowled with his usual boundless enthusiasim with no luck finishing on 10-1-47-0. Sameil Patel after an indifferent opening 2 overs returned for a late 2nd spell and showed his true potential for the future 4-0-28-0.Hambo mis-calculated the overs bowled ended up bowling a very forgetable last over for 15 runs.Abberton completed their innings on261-5.
Clive (14) & Phyllis got us off to a solid start in reply 33 off opening 9 overs before Clive was bowled by a ball according to him moved 2 feet but umpire Maca said it was a straight one through the gate. Phyllis was joined by the promoted Steve Nolan(8) at 3 continuing our solid progress witha further 28 runs off the next 9 overs 61-2. This brought Basher Bello (32) to the wicket who had an immediate effect on our run rate putting on a quick fire 68 in 10 overs with Steve before falling yet again to a catch in the deep.Maca(23) then put on a solid 35 with Steve taking us to 164-4 before being bowled in the 36thover. Tom Arcuclus (20)-well done Tom top score for the club joined steve putting on 49 in 9 overs.Phyllis was eventually out in the last over for a dogged 77 being at helm of our spirited reply ending at 215-5.
Thanks to Hambos friend Anton Roberts (1not out) and late arrival recent recruit Sam Harden who showed his usual enthusiasim in the field despite a horrid journey from London.
In conclusion we lost the game by 46 runs picking up our usual haul of well earned bonus points. On analysing the match we bowled too many 4 balls conceding 34 (too many)We need to improve all round to secure our Div3 status. At least Hambo will be absent for the next game allowing the unbeaten in 7 games Mr. G Dell to take charge. Good luck everybody.
6th September – Boxted IIs vs. Lexden – Boxted won by 10 runs
Having lost the toss for this must win game, skipper Bello saw his openers (Messrs Philpott and Honey) start to set some foundations for a challenging total. Yet another 50 run opening partnership was established, with the first wicket falling in the 18th over with the score on 54. What followed was a typical Boxted middle-order collapse and with the score on 104 for 5 it needed something special from Matt Wilson and the returning Mark Applin. Something special is definitely what we got, with Matt and Mark breaking the 6th wicket partnership for the 2nd team (119 runs in 13 overs). Mark’s 61 was an exemplar of timing, whilst Matt went for the more brutal approach; hitting 6 sixes in his personal best score of 82 not out. This resulted in Boxted attained 252 for 6 – a very challenging target, especially following the middle order’s contribution.
Following yet another fabulous tea by Jackie and Hazel, Boxted managed to restrict Lexden’s openers to 31 in 8 overs. Lexden’s 2nd wicket partnership then put on 80 runs (at 4 runs an over) to keep them very much in with a chance of winning, what turned out to be a very close game. Lexden’s Martin (59) and Jones (73) continued to defend the many good balls from Boxted’s bowlers and punished the bad balls offered up. Desperately needing wickets and to stem the flow of runs, Bello turned to Matt Wilson for the second time in the day. He responded accordingly and took three vital wickets. However Lexden only needed 36 runs from the last 5 overs, but the tight bowling of McKnight and Wilson (alongside a suicidal run-out) resulted in Boxted winning this hugely important game, by 10 runs.
This was a superb team effort and the 20 points gained could prove invaluable come the end of the season. Hopefully everyone’s nerves will have recovered in time for yet another important game at Tendring next week.
27th September - West Mersea Vs Boxted - West Mersea won by 46 runs
Our last fixture of the season took us to fellow strugglers W.Mersea for what was a relegation deciding fixture. We knew going into the game we needed a good performance to survive with a win or maximum bonus points.
On a bright balmy day for the end of Sept. Hambo lost the toss with Mersea electing to bat.Steve Nolan continued to show great promise for the future with a miserly opening spell of 6 overs conceding just 7 runs abley assisted again by Maca who also bowled tightly going for 27runs in opening 7 overs,Mersea 37-0 off 13 overs good start.Sunny was then intriduced to the attack bowling Goodridge (20)-56-1.Taylor then joined Laver and added 53 runs in 10overs to take Mersea to 109-2 before being bowled by Richard Springett who was getting back to his old self in this part of his game.Laver quickly followed bowled by Richard for 62 118-3.Bowers (2) was then caught by Mark Wright off Richard leving Mersea on 128-4 off 30 overs. Then came the Fuller Brothers show who plundered our attack for 123 runs in 10overs with some extemely hard hitting dispatching us to all areas of the boundary 251-5 D.Fuller 37 bowled by the brave C.Honey bowling the last over.Clive also had Sheldrick stumped or was that run out for 0.R. Fuller remained unbeaten on 87 hit in 14overs yet another high score against us again!Mersea finished on a daunting 252-6 off 40 overs.

Congratulations to Clive for yet again passing the 500 runs mark for the season a tremendous effort.Sunny & Mark then added 27 before Mark (18) was caught at slip off the bowling off the evergreen Trevor Vince.Steve NOlan batted intelligently and added 27 runs with sunny (10).Steve was caught for 15 with Maca also caught for 3.173-8.Mark Applin then bravely limped to the wicket to help gain those important bonus points,a gesture greatly appreciated by his skipper and fellow team mates.
